Zone suggestions Peak District

Post by LindaGC »

Hi, I’m new. I’ve made some suggestions in the app but I recall reading somewhere that it helped to flag them up here. There are currently only a few zones in the National Park and they are in tourist hot spots like Mam Tor. Here are some others in interesting and beautiful places. Thank you for Turf, it has been good fun.

1 Limestone Way
Nearest Turf point is “Peak District”
Limestone Way crosses Dirtlow, top of Cave Dale

Glad you have discovered Turf, and the Forum.

Yes, this is a very good place to flag for those extra special zone suggestions you have :)

Someone will look at your suggestions in the near future.

Sincerely,

Munin

I’d also like to support LindaGC’s suggestions for controls in the Peak District and suggest some more.
Big Moor is a wild and scenic area with some interesting pre-history, easily accessible from the city of Sheffield and near to the Turf Zones in Longshaw.
I have proposed three bronze-age stone circles:
Bar Brook 1 Stone Circle: BB1StoneCircl SK278755 very close to a bike and walker route.
Bar Brook 2 Stone Circle: BB2StoneCircl SK 277758 not far away from BB1 with paths between them (https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/53.27834/-1.58496)
Stoke Flat Stone Circle: SFStoneCircle SK249767 is also close to a bike and walker route on the other side of the moor.
They all have historic environment records like this https://her.derbyshire.gov.uk/Monument/MDR3984
A bit further south I’ve also suggested two monuments to our Napoleonic War commanders. WellingtonMnt (SK263736) and NelsonMonment (SK278729) are on the moors facing each other across the Bar Brook valley near Baslow. Both are named on the OS 1:25,000 map
By the way, I am disappointed that two of my nearest Turf Zones (CavendishHome and GetOut, an about 40-minute run from home) are in the Chatsworth House Garden, which costs £14 to enter. [Does this count as private property?] Is there any chance they could be moved (or supplemented), with zones in the publicly accessible Chatsworth Park? I’ve suggested QMaryBower (SK257702) and HuntingTower (SK264706), these are also both named on the OS 1:25,000 map.

LindaGC:

I have had a look and some of your suggestions will come true :)

However, at least three of them have the same map point, which makes it hard to find them.

A Turf Zone is normally about 25 m times 25 m, and this area generally should cover an open spot where no cars can drive. Your suggestion ButterCross does not meet these criteria and is unlikely to ever become reality. We also try to minimize the area a zone might cover a building.

PPPeter:

I will have a look at your suggestions. I also dislike zones you have to pay for to get to, but there is not general rule against this, so it is up to the zone maker to decide where the zone will be.

Have you also made suggestions in the app? It will help me locate your suggestions. Very good that you've added the closest existing zone to your suggestions! :)

Thanks Margereta,

Yes all my suggestions are also flagged in the app, though I might not have remembered the names I used exactly right.

Seeing your response to LindaGC, you'll see my QMaryBower zone (see https://www.chatsworth.org/park/about-t ... rys-bower/) app suggestion includes the building as it has a flat grassy top, but I think the gate at the top of the steps may be usually locked, so if my suggestion is accepted, it maybe best to have the zone slightly south (but include the steps so people can go and look while they are taking the zone). My HuntingTower app suggestion is fine (the viewpoint in front of the tower).

PPPEter:

If memory serves me both QMary and HuntingTower to some extent covers the path nearby. It is generally how I place zones. I hope you will like the new zones in your area, and suggest more for the future :)

Thanks Munin

The zones created are great, though Swisslake would be better 50m further south (to cover little path along dam) where you can see the lake and Swiss Cottage instead of being stuck in a muddy field entry. Or is that too narrow and you need to keep it off (unmetalled private estate) road.

I had an issue with phone reception at EdensorChurch yesterday. I couldn't take the zone despite visiting it twice. It will be interesting to see if anyone else can get it. I visited Treebenchring soon after first failure. I touched it again after 2nd failure; perhaps I should have avoided it to give iPhone a chance to catch up with better reception.

Further south Willesley Castle is inaccessible. I have raised an issue and have suggested CromfordPaths sk304575 as an alternative.

I've also suggest two zones on High Tor viewpoints: HighTorView (GiddyEdge might be a better name, https://www.visitpeakdistrict.com/downl ... 087547.pdf) & ValleyView, plus RiberCastle and RiberPathX (sk30385917) to provide an alternative loop from Matlock.

P.S. The pdf referenced in the above para suggests there an interesting direct path (‘Footpath to Lovers Walk’) between MatlockBath and DerwentWater that doesn't appear on OS 1:25,000, but I think the line is probably wrong and it skirts the top of the woods as shown on the OpenStreetMap/Strava map.

Hi
I posted several suggestions some weeks ago but haven’t had access to the forum till now. They are all in Darley Dale, midway between “Matlocktrain” and “Holybeely”.
To the best of my memory they were; Darley Bridge, picnic site, Darley Station, Joseph(monument to sir Joseph Whitworth) and Broadwalk.

I’d really like to see at least some of them come to fruition as it’s a long way to current alternatives.
