Remove the timer, not even devs use it

Post by DIProgan »

In a Turf newsletter a while ago "armpitying" was discussed as something legitimate and at least one developer is performing them as well. Why should anyone have to deal with the timer when not even devs care for it? If you wanted to create a game about manipulating your mobile phone you could have done better and shouldn't have disguised it as an outdoor game. The only logical paths forward to me is:

A. Remove the timer and add some extra measures to deal with bad GPS-signal
B. Make armpitying against the rules
C. If possible, make armpitying impossible to perform in code

There are a lot of people turfing together, without a timer it would be impossible to assist someone.

Could be solved with the timer being a setting you could enable or disable at will "Assist Timer".

Another possible solution is to have a "Link" button on each player profile. If you select to link your friend, the app does not perform takes before all your linked friends is within the zone.

For big crowdies there could be an "Assist x" option where the take isn't performed until x players is inside. There's simply a whole bunch of possible solutions.

Armpitturf is considered to be a noble art from our side, that is true. It often takes some practive and even the best doesn't succeed everytime.

But lately this new method of turning of your phones locations has increased. This method we see as a bigger problem. When using this method the turfer can easely travel to the next zone without risking that the turfman moves from the zones. The risk that the turfman would move was significant when using the armpit method so therefore we didn't see it as such a big problem.

As we understand it, this new method isn't as common as armpit turf yet but it will surely soon be discovered by many moore turfers and then we have an issue. So we have began to investigate how to stop it. We are not done yet but it could be that this bugfix will affect the armpitturfing as well.

I have used the turn off bug once because it's the only way to take a few zones in a forest close to Bonn. There is no internet at several locations there so the only way to take them is to get to the zone, turn of your location, bike back to civilization, turn on location again, go back into the forest for the second zone and repeat... Really annoying but can't see any other solution for that except talking to the mobile providers.

The internet coverage in germany isn't very good as soon as you get 500 m outside the villages. We Swedes are really spoiled when it comes to mobile internet in forests. You have to go quite far to lose connection completely. This forest in Bonn is well traveled, it has broad forest roads, some of them have separate bicycle tracks and there are named grill huts. But no internet...

Good to hear that work is being done on this bug. I have also recently seen more people take advantage of turning off their GPS / location service, whereupon the turf-avatar 'freezes' in the zone and they can continue on to the next zone while the 'frozen' turf-avatar takes the zone.
For me it feels like this should be fixed or give everyone the option of something close to instant take-time.
