New Zone Proposals for Camberwell to Herne Hill area

Post by Northstar »

Zone Proposals for Camberwell to Herne Hill
Justification- has been a bit of a 'hole' in zone provision; is an area where lots of people live and move through, has a few interesting sights/views and recent zone additions now building popularity- eg DenmarkHill had changed hands 5 times in the past day.

These are a lot of zones, submitted on the basis of 'you don't ask, you don't get'/that having a focussed set of zones will help make individual zones more attractive to turf to, and if they aren't all considered relevant now, to have flagged them now for ease with a view that in future they can be added (especially if zone markers are suggested in subsequent rounds). Hope this makes sense (I've had to resort to a 15 year old laptop so it's not the clearest...!) and thanks!

Zones suggested north to south, not necessarily in order of importance!

ButterflyWalk - (zone markers suggested through app, but also, google coordinates are 51.4723824,-0.0915623)
Reason- it's a very very busy interchange area

LoveWalk - (zone markers suggested through app, but also, google coordinates are 51.471209, -0.091122)
Reason- this location itself isn't exceptionally pretty (an alternative zone near a cafe to the west at the Love Walk/Denmark Hill intersection is much lovelier) but it does encourage you to go down through some lovely lanes (which are too narrow themselves to have their own zones)

SteelWarriors - (zone markers suggested through app, google coordinates 51.465255, -0.095187)
Reason- Ruskin Park is a popular location and deserves more zones, this particular location is the site of an outdoor gym made from melted down knives https://www.friendsofruskinpark.org.uk/ ... rs-launch/

RuskinView - (zone markers suggested in app, google coordinates 51.462680, -0.094919)
Reason -part of the drive for more zones in popular Ruskin Park, but also- this is a lovely view over Westminster part of London

FoxOnTheHill/FoxGardens - (google coords 51.4653033,-0.0892106)
Reason -in England, all walks end at a pub. Seriously, this is a nice location for relaxed views in a location associated with refreshments and entertainments associated with fox hunting.
https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/pub-histo ... nmark-hill

Blanchedown - (zone markers suggested in app, google coords 51.461486, -0.090827)
Reason - an outdoor gym in the middle of a huge roundabout on an interesting post-war social housing estate. http://www.ideal-homes.org.uk/southwark ... lanchedown

CarnegieLibry - (zone markers possibly suggested in app, google coords 51.460808, -0.096206)
Reason - it's a beautiful Victorian era library, and now associated with activism including a sit-in when the council tried to close local ibraries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnegie_ ... Herne_Hill

GreenDaleFields - (google coords 51.459452, -0.086564 - nb, this is for an area of road leading to the fields as though a path will be maintained, longer term, the fields are subject to -contested- development)
Reason - this forms part of a lovely walk/ the Greendale cyclepath behind Denmark Hill linking the zones Sunray Gardens and Francis park. Though annoyingly it may be built over in future, the throughwalks and cyclepath, and likely the wildlife areas, will be maintained.

HerneHillStation - (google coords 51.453164, -0.102458)
Reason - could this actually be a railway station zone type, although the intent would be to see the area generally- there's a handsome pedestrianised road, a quaint and now famous 'Flower Lady' shop by the station, a mural under the station with a piano for anyone to play (including sometimes professionals) and is basically what locals like to call a 'village' with gentrified shops including nice bakery, icecream, and yarn merchant. Oh, and of course a Sunday market.

BrockwellLido (google coords 51.452627, -0.105537 which is for an open area beyond the carpark)
Reason- Brockwell Park warrants more zones and the lido is a good destination- both having an awesome lido and gym (pay to enter) and cafe, and is near the start of the ParkRun route (when that restarts)

BrockwellView (google coords 51.450220, -0.106127)
Reason - a popular site for people taking arty pictures of people walking through the park with a view of
London behind. A good alternative could be to have a zone called BrockwellHall (51.449249, -0.106079), which focuses on the mansion complex including cafe, and then people would still see the view when moving across to the zone named BrockwellPark. (eg https://brockwellparkcommunitypartners. ... well-hall/)

Norwood Lodge (google coords 51.446962, -0.104751)
Reason- another for Brockwell Park, is a lovely little cottage formerly occupied by a groundsman but now the hub for a community garden, and also near the zone is a rarely-seen old horse water trough https://brockwellparkcommunitypartners. ... ge-garden/

Allotments (google coords 51.444700, -0.098287- the forecourt of the allotment behind the picket fence, and taking in the pavement, could form the zone)
Reason- there is a cycleway being built along Rosendale Road linking Herne Hill to Crystal Palace, (part of the larger Elephant to Crystal Palace Quietway 7) this is currently the end of the designated lane, and putting more zones in along this route as it's built could be a good idea. (The allotment itself is one of the largest in London, however beyond its metal gates is only accessible to members and visitors)

RosendaleField (google coords 51.442809, -0.097284)
Reason- this location is actually an island next to the road opposite Rosendale Field. The playing fields (contrasted to many in the area) is actually open to the public but this zone suggestion is designed for Turfers being lured down the cycleway toward Gipsy Hill and Crystal Palace.

Hi!

It seems like the most of your proposals were possible realize.
We generally try to make the zones 25*25m, not easily taken by car, in public areas without entrance fees and without opening hours (or very generous opening hours). One or two of your suggestions didn't meet those requirements, but we added some other zones instead.

Please continue to come with more suggestions both in the app and in this forum :)

Best regards, Wsnurr

Thanks so much! One of the zones you came up with was on a route I'd never seen before- this game is great for finding new things!
